The 4th Surgery Department was established in 1978 with the transformation of the surgery department of the CFR Cluj-Napoca Hospital into a university clinic. Over time, associate professor Sandu Bologa, lecturer Dumitru Muntean, associate professor Gheorghe Funariu, professor Mircea Cazacu, led the department; between 2009-2018 it was led by professor Valentin Muntean. From 2019, associate professor Sorin Traian Barbu leads the discipline. Initially the discipline was responsible for the surgical training of the students of the Faculty of Dentistry. Subsequently, the didactic activity extended to the students of the Faculty of Medicine and of the Faculty of licensed nurses. Currently, the discipline provides courses and practical activities for the students from the 3rd and 4th years of the Faculty of Medicine (Romanian and English sections) and students from the 3rd year of the Faculty of Dental Medicine (Romanian, English and French sections). We also provide practical activities for the 3rd and 6th year students at the Center for Practical Skills and Simulation in Medicine. The didactic activity aims at acquiring the basic knowledge regarding surgical diseases, the principles of surgical treatment, formation of diagnostic skills, establishment of therapeutic conduct, acquisition of surgical maneuvers, counseling of students who would like to pursue a surgical specialty. The medical activity is carried out in a unit of 80 beds and includes a wide range of operations, mainly from abdominal, pancreatic and thyroid surgery.
