The Simulation and Practical Skills Center at the "Iuliu Hatieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy offers great learning opportunities and training in all levels of medical practice for most fields. The overriding aim of the Centre is to improve safety for both the patient and the medical act.
The newly developed simulation-based education and medical practice allow for the correct clinical skills and behaviors to be achieved in an organized structure, under competent instructor supervision, on a well established schedule and, which is very important, bearing no risks for the patient.
Progressive exposure of the beneficiaries (undergraduate and postgraduate medical professionals) to various challenging aspects of the medical profession, similar to real-life situations, will contribute to reducing errors and increasing the quality of the medical act.
Complex, interdisciplinary scenarios allow team training and crisis management.

  • Providing medical and surgical simulation-based education and skill training as well as professional refinement for medical practitioners.
  • Continuous enhancement of the national medical education system involving the most efficient training methods, state-of-the-art equipment and technologies, so that patients will benefit from the highest quality medical care and utmost safety.
  • Employment of medical simulation techniques and equipment in order to provide tailored cognitive and procedural skills.
  • Encouraging inter-professional learning and teamwork, enhancing communication skills and professional abilities.
  • Developing innovative teaching methods and attending medical research and studies in order to improve medical education through simulation.
  • Collaboration with healthcare structures at both local and national levels, aiming to enhance medical care safety and also, implementing the acknowledged standards and certifications for various aspects of modern medicine.

The Simulation and Practical Skills Center is open to:

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate students at the "Iuliu Hatieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
  • Resident medical staff coordinated by the "Iuliu Ha?ieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, consistent with their specific field and curriculum.
  • Medical professionals working in hospitals and medical centers in Cluj County.
  • Students and medical professionals from other national and international universities that attend specific education or research courses or activities in collaboration with UMF.
  • Other allied health professionals involved in emergency intervention, such as firefighters, paramedics, military personnel, police officers. Complex simulation facilities allow for specific training. Various situations can be simulated requiring emergency aid coordinated between the medical staff and allied professionals, such as road accidents, fires, chemical or biological hazards.
  • Ministry of Health and Governmental Specialty Commissions. Exams may be organized at the Centre to grant medical degrees in different specialties, especially in emergency care (Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, Surgery, a.s.o.)
  • Public or private, industry or services businesses involved in the medical activity, bearing in view the development of specific products and equipment, such as medical instruments, biomaterials and biotechnologies.

The Simulation and Practical Skills Center within the "Iuliu Hatieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy has a modular structure so that maximum outcome is gained from the space and facilities at our disposal.
Within this modular structure, various laboratories serve specific activities.
Depending on available space and financing, the laboratories and facilities are under constant development.

  • Basic medical procedures laboratory. It is intended especially for beginner undergraduate students and residents. Basic medical techniques can be learnt in this laboratory so that performing them on real patients will be the safest. The equipment includes training software, manikins and instruments capable of simulating high-fidelity situations of: IM and IV injections, perfusion handling, male and female bladder tubing, nasogastric tubing, rectal and female pelvic examination, wound management.
    • Injection Trainer - Multi-layered soft tissue pad for the practice of intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular tissue injection techniques.
    • NG Tube and Trach Care Trainer - Torso task trainer designed for instruction in the care of patients with respiratory conditions and the practice of gastrointestinal care procedures via nasal and oral access.
    • Seymour II Wound Care Model - Molded from a 74-year-old patient, this model allows training in wound cleansing, classification, staging, and assessment
    • Clinical Female Pelvic Trainer - The life-size trainer presents accurate anatomical and tactile representation of the female pelvis for hands-on examination and diagnosis of pathologies and abnormalities.
    • Rectal examination trainer - A realistic representation of the buttocks, anus and rectum allowing for the practice of diagnostic skills associated with rectal examination.
    • Advanced Male and Female Catheterization Trainers - These trainers allow the trainee to learn urethral and supra-pubic catheterization on accurate male and female urethral anatomy. The feel of the catheter passing along the urethra into the bladder corresponds closely to real life. It offers synthetic and biologic samples for surgical training in various types of surgical techniques such as sutures, incisions, knots, removing threads a.s.o.

    • PHaSES Advanced KIT - is designed to address the developing skills that surgical trainees need, providing the learner with an opportunity to develop intermediate & advanced tissue handling & surgical skills
  • Emergency procedures laboratory - With its basic to advanced simulators, it provides the opportunity to teach and learn cardiac and respiratory resuscitation techniques, airways management, general and specific trauma patient management (cervical and emergency fractures immobilization, bleeding management, defibrillation, patient transportation, a.s.o.). These procedures are available in both adult and child simulators.
    • ResusciAnne SkillReporter - is an adult CPR training manikin that focuses on student performance through reports on ventilation and compression compliance. In addition, first aid and extrication practice can be incorporated into the learning by adding the optional first aid and rescue limbs and airway management.
    • Resusci Junior - offers realistic, high-quality child CPR education. It has full-body construction and use of an optional SkillGuide performance indicator.
    • Ultimate Hurt - The multi-functional manikin for rescue, extrication, and trauma care. Trauma modules interchange with blank modules on the adult manikin for realism in trauma life support and life saving first aid scenarios.
    • Choking Charlie - is an adult torso designed specifically for training students in the performance of the Heimlich Abdominal Thrust Maneuver. Realistic anatomy and response using simulated boluses provide instructors with an excellent tool for instructing and practicing this lifesaving technique.
    • Ultimate Hurt - The multi-functional manikin for rescue, extrication, and trauma care. Trauma modules interchange with blank modules on the adult manikin for realism in trauma life support and life saving first aid scenarios.
    • Laerdal Airway Management Trainer - Realistic practice is the key to developing proficiency in airway management skills. The Laerdal Airway Management Trainer's lifelike upper torso and head simulates real-world complications when practicing a variety of intubation, ventilation, and suction techniques.
  • Anaesthesia and Intensive Care laboratory - It supplies complex simulations for cases that require advanced life support. Students and medical professionals can learn specific procedures: spinal puncture, difficult intubation, anaesthesia procedure and observation, a.s.o.
    • SimMan 3G – Laerdal Patient Simulator - is the next-generation of Laerdal medical simulators, completely wireless and self-contained,
      technicaly advanced and yet easy to use.
    • SimBaby – Laerdal Patient Simulator - was especially designed to meet training needs based on anaesthesia, pediatric advanced life support and difficult infant airway management.
    • Laerdal ALS Simulator - The Advanced Life Support Patient Simulator is a realistic interactive training manikin for simulating a wide range of advanced life saving skills.
    • Laerdal ALS Baby - The Laerdal ALS baby is a portable skill trainer for realistic infant resuscitation training. Laerdal ALS Baby manikin is a three-month-old infant with an anatomy that offers exceptional realism for individual training. The Laerdal ALS baby offers the opportunity to practice advanced resuscitation skills, including airway management, professional rescuer CPR, vascular access, and 4-lead ECG monitoring.
    • SimMan – Laerdal Patient Simulator - SimMan allows learners to practice the emergency treatment of patients on an advanced patient simulator for team training. It has realistic anatomy and clinical functionality.
    • Laerdal VitalSim Simulator - VitalSim is designed to be used for realistic medical training within emergency care and nursing. It can be used with different types of manikins to simulate vital signs such as breathing, pulse, blood pressure, ECG, heart, lung and bowel sounds. Vocal (spoken sounds) are also generated.
    • IV Torso - The most realistic tool for adult IV training, the IV torso allows practicing of intravenous access techniques for both advanced cardiac life support and trauma. The IV Torso has been specifically designed to meet the key educational goals of training programs.
      Advanced Venipuncture Arm - This simulator is ideal for practicing skills related to venipuncture, phlebotomy and IV cannulation on a realistic and easy to use platform.
  • Ultrasonography laboratory - It offers simulation for basic, emergency and intervention ecography (ultrasound guided puncture, biopsies, a.s.o.)
    • Venue 40 Ultrasound – GE Healthcare - is designed for real-time "point of care" procedures in surgery, emergency medicine, the ICU and musculoskeletal care. Venue 40 provides rapid diagnostics and visualization of needle guidance for a range of applications, including vascular access, aspiration, nerve block and therapeutic injection, and biopsy-fine needle aspiration and vein care.
  • Endoscopy laboratory - It allows teaching and learning various basic and advanced endoscopic procedures: gastroscopy, colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, endoscopic homeostasis, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, a.s.o.
    • GI-BRONCH Mentor – Simbionix GI Endoscopy and Bronchoscopy Training Simulator - is a combined paltform for virtual reality simulation training of GI endoscopy and flexible bronchoscopy. Additionally, this simulator incorporates a variety of practice opportunities consisting of essential skill tasks as well as full clinical procedures across an extensive training curriculum including everything from the endoscopic skills to the fundamentals of endoscopic skills to advanced procedures such as ERCP and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS).
  • Obstetrics laboratory - It offers training for natural and pathologic delivery.
    • PROMPT Birthing Simulator - The PROMPT Simulator enables instructors to effectively teach the complexities associated with birthing while participants can practice the skills required for successful deliveries. The detachable abdominal enables visualization of internal maneuvers and how they affect the fetus in-utero.
  • Surgical simulationand animal operation room - With its specific simulation stations, various software programs, synthetic and biologic mannequins, it provides opportunities to teach and learn surgical procedures in different surgical specialties. Real life situations are replicated within the laboratory to simulate actual surgery theatres and various surgical interventions: laparoscopic digestive surgery (cholecystectomy, bariatric surgery, cholectomy, a.s.o.), gynecologic laparoscopy, ENT surgery, orthopedic surgery (arthroscopy), urologic surgery (nephrectomy), microsurgery, a.s.o.
    • SMARTCART Karl Storz Equipment cart - The SMARTCART equipment cart line by KARL STORZ offers numerous innovative features that support ergonomic and efficient procedures as well as patient and user safety. The equipment installed comprises a cold light fountain Xenon Nova 175, an electronic endoflator, a data acquisition device AIDA compact NEO, an ESU Autocon II 400, a Powershaver SL, a neuro and spinal all-in-one Unidrive S III ECO, an Image 1 Hub, Duomat suction irrigation system and a Unidrive GYN insuflator.
    • Fabius Plus – Dräger anaesthesia workstation - The Dräger Fabius Plus is a compact workstation that combines quality ventilation with enhanced flexibility and integration capabilities. It was designed to accommodatea wide range of options and accessories, allowing the user to customize it to suit any particular needs.
    • LAP Mentor – Simbionix laparoscopic simulator - LAP Mentor provides a laparoscopic training solution to learners of all levels and across all disciplines including gynecology, urology and general surgery. The state-of-the-art technology enables high fidelity, complex, laparoscopic procedure simulations for learners to experience in a safe environment
    • Brechtold Chromophare E 650 - Chromophare 650 is an efficient and cost-effective lighting system, highly configurable and adaptable, using BRITe halogen light source. Optics produce both deep penetration and superior shadow control as well as consistent illumination across the field.
    • Surgical table - Adjustable, stainless steel surgical table equipped for drainage and instrument stands needed in a surgical event.
    • Leica M320 Surgical Microscope - The Leica M320 F12 bundles apochromatic optical quality with cutting-edge LED illumination and high-definition imaging technology. Ease of use and flexible, smooth maneuverability are additional characteristics of this microscope.
    • Zeiss Microscope Laboratory - Starting from useful magnification through to a perfectly adjusted microscope it makes learning how to use a microscope as simple as can be. All the functions and operation can be quickly learned. The ergonomic adjustment of the viewing height, country-specific plugs and option of use in the field have been designed for international usage.
